Sizing a Basement Right
A typical basement of furniture and boxes fits a 10 yard, about three pickup truck loads. Finished-basement demo or a packed basement takes the 15. The weight trap: water-damaged basements. Soaked carpet, wet boxes, and damp furniture are far heavier than dry, so flooded-basement cleanouts should size up or plan the overage. Mattresses are $35 each. Regular appliances are fine, except anything with Freon or containing gas or oil. Batteries and electronics stay out.
What Cannot Go In the Dumpster
No hazardous materials or medical waste. No paint (empty paint cans are OK). No batteries or propane tanks. No liquids, solvents, chemicals, or anything containing Freon. No equipment containing gas or oil.
Concrete, clean dirt, asphalt, and brick are accepted as single-material clean loads in dedicated 10 or 20 yard containers arranged by phone at 201-566-7719. Clean loads are priced per container instead of the tonnage and overage schedule, loaded within safe and legal hauling limits. Mixing any other material makes it a mixed load billed by the ton.
FAQ
What size dumpster for a basement cleanout?
A 10 yard clears most basements. Packed or finished-basement demo takes the 15.
My basement flooded. Anything different?
Yes, weight. Soaked material is far heavier than dry, so size up or expect overage billed per ton at the county rate.
Can the old basement fridge go in?
No. Anything containing Freon cannot, and neither can equipment with gas or oil, batteries, or electronics. Other furniture and appliances are fine. Mattresses are $35 each.
Do I need a permit?
Not on your own driveway, and driveway protection is included.
